Palm Desert is an endlessly appealing vacation destination and a location that’s also full of surprises! The following are just a few of the things you might not know about this exciting city.
The Area Has an Interesting and Rich History
Before Palm Desert was called by its modern name, it was referred to as Old Macdonald Ranch! By the 1920s, the area became an oasis for date palms to be planted and cultivated and the name transitioned to Palm Village. Residential developments began growing in the area around 1943 in conjunction with the Army maintenance camp that was established. The city was officially incorporated in 1973 and has since become a mecca of retail fun, amazing eateries, stunning views and tantalizing hiking trails too!
The Geography Means Plenty of Sun and Great Weather
Many visitors to Palm Desert head this way in expectation of plenty of sunshine and great weather, but fewer know why that’s the case. The answer lies in the area’s climate being affected by the surrounding geography. There are high mountains found on three sides of Palm Desert and a south-sloping valley too. In combination, these landforms lend themselves to a unique year-round warm weather climate with average highs lingering around 89 degrees Fahrenheit and lows down to 62 degrees.
There’s a Variety of Activities and Attractions to Check Out
No matter when you find yourself in Palm Desert, you’re sure to enjoy access to amazing attractions, activities, views, and entertainment along the way. Palm Desert is home to the College of the Desert as well as the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. McCallum Theatre is a top performing arts theater in the area while the Philip L. Boyd Deep Canyon Desert Research Center in Palm Desert is linked to the University of California Natural Reserve System.
